GIFT
Gamete intrafallopian transfer, or GIFT, was developed in 1984 primarily for couples with unexplained infertility. GIFT is approximately the same cost as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and yields similar success rates; however the process is a more painful procedure than IVF.
For GIFT, a woman needs only one working fallopian tube, as well as normal semen and a good post coital test result. Usually, couples with unexplained fertility are the best candidates. Like IVF, fertility drugs are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple follicles. GIFT differs from IVF in that instead of fertilizing the eggs in a laboratory, the woman's eggs and her partner's washed sperm are immediately mixed in a syringe and inserted into the fallopian tube via laparoscopy. A general anesthetic is necessary for this procedure.
