Assisted Embryo Hatching

Assisted embryo hatching may facilitate embryo hatching, thus increasing the chances of implantation in the uterus. Prior to embryo transfer, the outer membrane of the embryo is thinned via acid, and a small opening is created. The acid is released from a small needle. This opening may assist with implantation of the embryo into the uterus by enabling its cells to come into contact with the uterine lining.

Candidates for assisted embryo hatching are women who are in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients who produce many high quality embryos, but who have not achieved pregnancy because their embryos have failed to implant.
